Job Summary:
The Library Media Specialist will be responsible for providing comprehensive library and media services to support the educational goals of the organization. This role requires a strong foundation in library and information science, along with expertise in instructional technology and media resources. The Library Media Specialist will collaborate with teachers, students, and staff to develop and implement innovative programs that foster information literacy, critical thinking, and digital citizenship.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Develop and maintain a well-organized library media center that aligns with the organization's vision and curriculum requirements.
2. Provide instruction to students and staff on effective research strategies, information evaluation, and ethical use of information.
3. Collaborate with teachers to integrate library resources and instructional technology into lesson plans, ensuring alignment with curriculum goals.
4. Assist students and staff in locating and utilizing print and digital resources, including books, databases, online content, and audiovisual materials.
5. Manage the library collection, including selection, acquisition, cataloging, and weeding of materials, ensuring an up-to-date and diverse collection.
6. Develop and deliver engaging library media programs that promote reading, information literacy, and media literacy skills.
7. Stay abreast of emerging trends and best practices in library science, instructional technology, and media resources, and share knowledge with colleagues.
8. Foster a positive and inclusive library environment that encourages intellectual curiosity, collaboration, and respect for diverse perspectives.
9. Collaborate with the library team to develop and implement library policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with copyright laws and ethical standards.
10. Participate in professional development activities, conferences, and workshops to enhance knowledge and skills in library media services.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. Master's degree in Library and Information Science or related field.
2. State certification or eligibility for certification as a Library Media Specialist.
3. Strong knowledge of library science principles, including cataloging, classification, and collection development.
4. Proficiency in instructional technology tools and resources, such as learning management systems, multimedia software, and online databases.
5. Familiarity with emerging educational technologies and their applications in library and media services.
6. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with students, teachers, staff, and parents.
7. Demonstrated ability to design and deliver engaging library programs and instructional sessions.
8. Strong organizational and time management abilities to meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
9. Knowledge of information literacy frameworks and ability to promote critical thinking and research skills.
10. Commitment to fostering an inclusive and culturally responsive library environment.
